Meaning and Symbolism

  • Colors: Prayer flags traditionally come in sets of five colors, arranged in a specific order from left to right: blue, white, red, green, and yellow. Each color represents one of the five elements and the Five Pure Lights in Tibetan Buddhism.
    • Blue: Sky and space.
    • White: Air and wind.
    • Red: Fire.
    • Green: Water.
    • Yellow: Earth.
  • Mantra: The most common mantra found on these flags is "Om Mani Padme Hum," which is a six-syllable mantra associated with the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteśvara. The mantra is believed to contain the essence of all Buddhist teachings.
    • Om: Symbolizes the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind, and also the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.
    • Mani: Means "jewel" and represents the factors of method, such as the altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.
    • Padme: Means "lotus" and symbolizes wisdom.
    • Hum: Represents the indivisible unity of method and wisdom.
  • Tradition: It is believed that when the wind blows on the flags, the prayers and mantras are carried into the world, spreading goodwill and compassion. As the flags fade and fray, the prayers are thought to become a permanent part of the universe.
